Ishigaki  Ofice GOAT
A garden with goats.

A cool, quiet office,
where a black pig rests  on a  velvet chaise longue.

A surreal garden hidden beneath a sky full of stars,
reflecting the free-spirited, artist-like nature of its owner.

Garden Construction

Plants grow, and stones weather in the rain and wind, slowly changing their expression.

And the garden moves toward completion.

After five years, this garden has finally begun to reveal its true form.

The Isogai Residence

Within a concrete residential neighborhood,
a courtyard carved into a space barely two square meters.
A tropical Japanese garden shaped from the island's own materials.
A different world, quietly unfolding beyond the window.

At dusk, one once crossed the stepping stones to light the lantern.
This small space sketches the remembered circulation of a former life.

SandenA Traditional Red-Tile Roof House in Isigaki Island

IMG_7560_edited_edited_edited.jpg

A traditional house on Ishigaki  Island with a red-tile roof, rich in hiostory,is being reborn as a place to stay.

Overgrown plantings were boldly removed and relocated, rebuilding the garden from the ground up.

The combination of pure white coral slab stones and Shirakawa gravel is a new exploration.

Light and shadow come alive here.

A gentle breeze flows through the garden.

Niwa tune Philosophy

The Spirit of Garden Making

We begin by offering respect to the land.

We touch the soil and listen carefully, nurturing plants with patience.
Whenever possible,we use stones and vegetation already present on the site as the foundation of the garden.

We do not use chemical pesticides or synthetic treatments.

Instead,we select plants suited to the environment and care for the soil.
Imbalances-whether of insects or microorganisms-are simply signals to restore harmony.

As we work, we move our bodies so that both the garden and ourselves become clear and grounded.

We observe the flow of water, guide the movement of air, and shape light and shadow.
Our aim is to create spaces where every living being in the garden can thrive in health.

A garden should feel warm - as if simply being there gently softens the body and spirit.

It would be our greatest joy to create such a place of quiet happiness.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to work in your gardens, and to do so with a sense of comfort and respect each day.

Profile ー Giichirou Katsuta (Garden Craftsman)

Born in 1971 in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and raised there, I developed a deep interest in the relationship between people and the land, which led me to pursue a  path in landscape and garden making.

In 1995, I left Kuwasawa Design School to pursue the study of traditional Japanese gardens and committed myself to the path of a garden craftsman.

I had the privilege of studying under my teacher, the late Kiyoshi Imaizumi, from whom I inherited the traditional Edo-period pruning techniques and their underlying spirit.

At the age of 28, I encountered a breathtaking sea of clouds that profoundly changed my life.
It became a turning point, awakening me to the realization that countless unseen landscapes still exist in this world.

After that, I lived and worked in various regionsー
Iwate, Kamakura, Hakone, Izu, and Okinawaーlearning garden techniques rooted in each place while living in harmony with nature.

In 2010, I established my studio, "Niwatune"

In my approach to garden making, I learn from nature, respect the wisdom of those who came before us, and continue to explore new expressions that emerge through this dialogue.
